Comedian, Andover Native Jay Leno Suffers Facial Burns In Gas Fire

The former "The Tonight Show" host reportedly was hospitalized Sunday in Los Angeles after a car erupted into flames in his garage.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Legendary comedian and Andover native Jay Leno confirmed to Variety on Monday that he was hospitalized over the weekend after suffering "serious burns" in a gasoline fire in his Los Angeles garage.

Variety reported that the 72-year-old comedian was in stable condition.

"I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire. I am ok. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet," Leno told the publication.

According to Variety, People magazine reported Sunday that Leno had to cancel a public appearance in Las Vegas due to a "serious medical emergency." However, the nature of the emergency was not revealed.

The celebrity gossip website TMZ, later reported that Leno was in the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles after suffering a serious injury to his face on Sunday.

According to TMZ, Leno was in the Burbank garage where he stores his cars when one vehicle erupted into flames without warning.

"The flames burned the left side of Jay's face, but thankfully did not penetrate his eye or his ear," TMZ reported.

Leno, the former host of "The Tonight Show," is known to be an avid collector of cars and motorcycles. He has hosted the CNBC series "Jay Leno's Garage," since 2015.

Leno graduated from Andover High School in 1968.
