Critics have had, let's say, less than positive things to say about the latest Marvel superhero movie, which was filmed in Massachusetts.

ANDOVER, MA — While superhero movies are consistent winners for Hollywood studios, that hasn't been the case for "Madame Web." The Bob Marley biopic "One Love" is expected to beat Marvel's latest offering at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That's likely in part due to the scathing reviews of "Madame Web," with critics bashing everything from its use of CGI to its lackluster script and absence of humor.

And much of this "embarrassing mess," as 3C Films called it, was filmed in locations around Massachusetts. Films modeling 2000s New York City, including Chinatown, were shot in Boston's Financial District beginning July 11, 2022, Boston.com reported. Then later that month, filming occurred in Allston at Kelton Street.

In August 2022, the film was shot in Chelsea while construction of a set in Andover had begun for a diner. Scenes were also filmed at baseball fields in West Andover.

Driving and exterior street shot scenes were filmed in various locations in Worcester in September 2022 before production moved to New York City in October, according to The Worcester Telegram.

"Madame Web" is a Spider-Man spin-off and stars Dakota Johnson as "a New York paramedic who develops the ability to see the future … and realizes she can use that insight to change it." Sony Pictures, which owns Marvel, describes the film as "a switch from the typical genre" featuring "one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines."

But while Johnson's performance received some favorable press, ultimately "Madame Web" was panned by both critics and viewers alike. The movie scored a woeful 15 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 2.6-star average on 553 Google reviews.

The Hollywood Reporter called it "an airless and stilted endeavor driven by a mechanical screenplay … Its lack of imagination would be astounding if it wasn’t so expected."

USA Today trashed it right from the headline: "'Madame Web' review: Dakota Johnson headlines the worst superhero movie since 'Morbius.'"

IndieWire was similarly unimpressed, calling it "a superhero movie that seems made by and for people who've never seen a superhero movie."

And just in case you haven't gotten the point that critics hated this movie, Rolling Stone piled on, saying it was "a genuine, Chernobyl-level disaster."
