While this hurricane may not have been record-breaking in general for Merrimack Valley and the state as a whole, National Grid said it has been one of the worst power failures in decades.

“This will take a several day effort. It may go into the weekend,” said Mary Ellen Paravalos, a director at National Grid, about restoring power to all customers throughout New England.

She said that roughly 3,500 employees are currently working to restore power to New England and more employees are being flown in from Colorado and Texas.

In terms of power outages, Paravalos said that this storm was worse than the ice storm of 2008 and as bad as both Hurricane Bob in 1991 and Hurricane Gloria in 1985.

"In some ways it was more challenging [than Bob and Gloria] because  it was such a huge wide storm,” said Paravalos. “Every part of our service areas were affected by winds or flooding. To see that kind of magnitude across that geographical area is very unusual.”
