Proposed Redistricting Creates Little Change for Andover

With new census data for 2010, the state has redrawn state legislative districts to provide equal representation following population shifts.

The process of redrawing state legislative districts has come nearly to an end and the state yesterday released proposed maps of the new districts. Due to population shifts realized from the 2010 US census data, state officials must redistrict the state so that towns and cities are given equal representation in the state legislature.

However, Andover will continue to be part of the 17th and 18th districts in the state house of representatives as well as the Second Essex and Middlesex district in the state senate. The represntative for the 17th district is Rep. Paul Adams, R-Andover, and the 18th district is Rep. Jim Lyons, R-Andover. State Senator Barry Finegold represents the Second Essex and Middlesex district.

The legislative districts covering Andover did grow on average, however. The Second Essex and Middlesex district grew by 4.54 percent. The 17th district grew by 4.98 percenet and the 18th district grew by 9.33 percent.
