Traffic Changes Go Into Effect At Andover's Elm Square
The traffic changes are part of a plan to enhance pedestrian safety and went into effect Tuesday.

ANDOVER, MA — Planned traffic pattern changes to improve pedestrian safety take effect Tuesday at Elm Square in Andover, according to a statement from the town. Vehicle traffic will be stopped in all directions while walk signs are activated at the intersection.
Slip lanes will remain under yield to pedestrian control as they are not signalized.
Right turns on red are now prohibited from North Main Street southbound and Main Street northbound. No turn on red signs have also been posted at both approaches.

The changes were among the recommendations that came out of a recently completed Road Safety Audit, part of the town's "broader effort to assess and implement safety improvements at the intersection."

The town has held public forums and conducted the traffic study in the wake of a tragic accident that resulted in the death of a 5-year-old girl.
Sidney Olson was struck by a tractor-trailer in May as she was walking to art class with her family along Main Street. Sidney and another member of her family were using the crosswalk on Elm Street with the walk sign showing when the accident occurred.
