Brownsberger Snags Sierra Club's Nod

With the election two months away, incumbent pulls in environmental groups OK.

Incumbent state Rep. Will Brownsberger got a significant boost in his re-election bid with his endorsement by the Massachusetts Sierra Club, one of state's largest environmental organizations.

"Rep. Brownsberger has not only been a leader on environmental issues in the Legislature but has led the way in his personal life as well," said Phil Sego, Massachusetts Sierra Club Political Chairman.

"In addition to writing and supporting important environmental legislation Brownsberger lives his life in ways that demonstrate what each of us can do to help. He is a regular bike commuter, is making his home as energy efficient as possible and more," said Sego.

"It is a proud pleasure to endorse Rep. Brownsberger," said Sego.

Brownsberger, a Democrat, will face Independent challenger Lalig Musserian on Nov. 2 for the seat representing the 24th Middlesex District, which covers part of Arlington and Cambridge and the town of Belmont.

With the general election only eight weeks away, candidates are attempting to garner the endorsements of important organizations as both validation of their work supporting the group and their vision and as shot in the arm for both campaign fundraising and securing the vote of a significant portion of the electorate.

In the Sierra Club's case, the endorsement is communicated to its 20,000 members statewide.

The nod will also influence voters who are seeking to vote for an environmental stalwart.

"The Sierra Club endorsement means a lot to me," said Brownsberger.

"Transportation, energy conservation, 'green jobs' and climate change issues affecting the district and the state are important areas I will continue actively working on," said Brownsberger.

The Sierra Club said that its endorsees have a proven record of leadership on pressing environmental issues such as protecting the environment through energy conservation, alternative energy development, transit, toxics reduction and more.

"Any time we can recognize environmental leadership we try to do so," said Sego. "Political leadership is as important as ever – we're increasing stress on the waste stream, our water supply, our transportation systems and our public lands while cutting these agencies budgets. Leadership is necessary to keep our environment, and our families, healthy and safe."

The Sierra Club is the nation's oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization dedicated to the preservation, protection, and exploration of the Earth's natural environment.
