Cause Of Arlington Fire Determined; Fundraiser Established
One person died in a two-alarm fire at Chestnut Manor Saturday morning.

ARLINGTON, MA — Investigators have determined a two-alarm fire at a senior housing complex in Arlington was accidental.
One person died and dozens of residents were displaced by the fire at Chestnut Manor, which began in a third-floor apartment early Saturday. The state fire marshal's office determined the cause was an electric baseboard heater that either malfunctioned or was close to combustible items.
"Home heating is the second-leading cause of residential fires, and historically they are most common in January," State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey said in a statement. "It's important to keep curtains, bedding, clothing, and other items that can burn at least three feet away from a heat source. Our 'Keep Warm, Keep Safe' campaign provides helpful information for home heating safety, with resources available in seven languages."

Authorities have identified the victim as a woman over 65 years old. They are withholding her name while the family is notified.
"On behalf of the Arlington Fire Department, I want to express our deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones," Fire Chief Kevin Kelley said. "Her loss is a tragedy for the family and the community."

Kelley said working smoke alarms and fire sprinklers in the seven-story complex on Medford Street helped prevent further disaster.
"Without smoke alarms and sprinklers, this morning's tragedy could have been even worse," he said Saturday.
The Arlington Department of Health and Human Services, Council on Aging and the Arlington Housing Authority have set up a relief fund to support the 16 people displaced by the fire. Funds will be used to find new living arrangements and replace items lost in the fire.
