James Feeney Named Arlington Town Manager

The Arlington Select Board has named James Feeney as Arlington's next Town Manager, to succeed Town Manager Sandy Pooler.

The Arlington Select Board has named James Feeney as Arlington’s next Town Manager, to succeed Town Manager Sandy Pooler upon his retirement in July. Mr. Feeney currently serves as the Town’s Deputy Town Manager for Operations. He will begin his appointment on August 1, 2023.

The Town Manager supervises and directs the administration of all Town departments and employees in accordance with the Town Manager Act.

“The Board is so pleased that Jim has accepted the appointment,” said Eric Helmuth, Arlington’s Select Board Chair. “Having worked in, and with, many Town departments, Mr. Feeney’s institutional knowledge of Arlington is deep and his enthusiasm for public service strong. The Board is confident that the Arlington community and our Town staff will benefit greatly from his service.”

Prior to serving as Arlington’s Deputy Town Manager for Operations, Mr. Feeney served as the interim Facilities Director from September 2019 to June 2021. During this time he was tasked with overseeing building projects, as well as developing and implementing pandemic response strategies in schools and public buildings. Prior to this role, Mr. Feeney served as Arlington’s Assistant Town Manager where he played a lead role in community relations and was responsible for capital project management and oversight of the Community Preservation Act funded projects as well as serving as the Public Records Access Officer for the Town. Feeney also served as Arlington’s Health Compliance Officer and has performed the roles of acting Director of Health & Human Services and interim Director of Recreation. While working for Arlington he also served as a lead facilitator at Boston University’s Office of Distance Education.

Prior to coming to Arlington in 2009, Feeney received a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Health Science at Boston University’s Sargent College, and a Masters in Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology from Boston University’s School of Public Health.
