When you think sporting goods in Attleboro, it's hard not to think about Ryan and Sons Family Sports and Embroidery. Originally an army surplus store, the business has been around for half a century.
Patch recently got the chance to catch up with store owner TJ Ryan, who owns the store with his father, Bob. The store has been in the Ryan family since its inception as a sports supply store.
Patch: How did the store get started?
Ryan: It was an army surplus store store originally. [My grandfather] ended up buying the franchise. It changed names to Ryan and Sons and it became a sporting goods store. We had guns. We had everything.
Patch: What is one thing Attleboro residents may not know about your business?
Ryan: A lot of people know we do embroidery, but we do a lot of it… a lot of different school stuff, printing and stuff like that.

Patch: How has your business been affected by the down economy?
Ryan: Everything is slower. Instead of people coming in to buy a glove and getting extra stuff too, now they just come in and buy just the glove. They buy just what they need instead of just a little extra. Nobody has the money.

Patch: What do you like about owning a business in Attleboro?
Ryan: The people – the customers.
Patch: For you personally, what is the best part about your job?
Ryan: It’s family – the history of it. It’s been around for so long and to think that my family started it and it’s still going - it’s been three generations.
