Emergency Crews Battling Active Hazmat Situation In Attleboro

ATTLEBORO, MA — Police and fire crews are responding to what they are calling a hazmat situation at a chemical company in Attleboro.

Teknor Apex is the property owner of this location and the space where the spill occurred is leased to a third party.

Attleboro police sent out a tweet Friday morning, saying a 15,000 gallon tank full of sulfuric acid is actively leaking.

Sulfuric acid can corrode metal and cause severe burns when it touches skin. Sulfuric acid is most commonly used in fertilizer manufacture but is also used in mineral processing, oil refining, wastewater processing, and chemical synthesis.

Police originally labeled it as a Tier 1 hazmat incident, but now it has been raised to a Tier 2 hazmat incident occurring at Teknor Apex, located at 330 Victor Road in Attleboro.

A Tier 2 hazmat incident involves hazardous materials that is beyond the capabilities of the first responders on the scene and could be beyond the capabilities of the public sector responders having jurisdiction.

Teknor is actively monitoring the situation and the tenant is working with a hazmat team to resolve the spill.

There is no word on injuries, and no other information was immediately available.
