Boston Fall Leaf Collection to Run Through Nov. 29

Boston residents who have been or have started cleaning their properties for the fall season can now take advantage of the Boston Public Works Department’s fall leaf collection program, which kicked off on Monday, Oct. 13, an effort that will run through the end of November.

Crews will collect and compost residents’ leaves and yard waste through Saturday, Nov. 29. Residents can place yard waste and leaves in large paper leaf bags or barrels labeled “yard waste” (plastic bags will not be accepted) during their regular curbside recycling day.

Earlier this year, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh announced that the department had expanded its leaf and yard waste collection to include weeks during the months of June, July, August and September. More than 1,000 tons of yard waste has been saved from the trash and has been composted, according to officials.

Residents should heed the following instructions for yard waste and leaf collection this fall:

  • Place leaves and yard waste in large paper bags or barrels labeled “yard waste.” No plastic bags will be accepted. Yard waste stickers for barrels are available and can be obtained by calling 617-635-4500 or by submitting a request online here.
  • Tie branches with string as follows: 3-foot maximum length, 1-inch maximum diameter. Don’t put branches in barrels.
  • Barrels, bags and branches should be placed on curb by 7 a.m. on recycling day during the week. Leaf collection for residents with more than one recycling day will take place on their first recycling day of the week.
