Authors Rebecca Miller and Doris Kearns Goodwin at the BPL

1. BPL talk: Author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will appear onstage with writer Rebecca Miller during a Wednesday 6 p.m. author talk at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square. Miller is the author of the century-spanning novel Jacob’s Folly. Goodwin is known for her grand examinations of U.S. presidents. One of Goodwin's books, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, was adapted into the Academy Award-nominated film Lincoln, which stars Miller's husband, actor Daniel Day-Lewis.
2. Phoenix closing: In the bummer department, longstanding Boston weekly newspaper The Boston Phoenix announced Thursday that its ending publication. The issue now on newsstands will be the Phoenix's last. In a blog post, editor in chief Carly Carioli wrote, "It wasn't a secret, inside the building, that ad revenue, after an initial surge when we relaunched the magazine, was down -- way down."
3. Flower Show: Get a taste of spring at the Boston Flower and Garden Show, open today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Seaport World Trade Center (200 Seaport Blvd.).
