After flunking three of the four inspections conducted by state consumer protection officials, Shaw's supermarkets had to fork over $8,000 in fines, according to Mitch Lipka, Consumer Alert blogger for The Boston Globe.

The inspections were conducted to see if markets complied with a new pricing law, under which stores can apply for waivers to avoid item pricing, as long as scanners are provided to customers.
