HYANNIS, MA — The Cape Cod Gateway Airport will be a little busier this summer as the first American Airlines flights into Hyannis landed on Wednesday.

Flights are now available from New York LaGuardia Airport and Washington Reagan National Airport. The first flight into Hyannis arrived at 12:19 p.m., officials confirmed last week.

According to American, this could be a big draw to the company for those looking to get to Cape Cod via flight, as they will be the only global network carrier with routes directly to the airport. This means more than 80 destinations across North America now have access to Cape Cod through a connecting flight in New York or Washington D.C.

Airport officials also note the convenience for Cape residents, who no longer need to travel to Boston or Providence when looking to go out of town.

“Direct access to Cape Cod via New York or Washington on American Airlines will bring a tremendous benefit to not only Cape Cod Gateway Airport, but the entire region,” said Cape Cod Gateway Airport Manager Katie Servis. “The Cape’s travel and tourism economy receives a boost, while an incredible convenience is provided to Cape residents who no longer have to travel to Boston or Rhode Island to make a connection.”

Hyannis isn't the only new addition to the lineup of American flights to New England.

According to the company, flights to Bangor and Portland, Maine, and Halifax, Canada begin on June 5 from LaGuardia. Flights to Martha's Vineyard from LaGuardia begin on June 22.
