Although Superstorm Sandy seems like just yesterday, New England's hurricane season has officially begun again.
Hurricane season spans from June 1 through Nov. 30, according to the National Weather Service. About 12 tropical storms are expected each year, while three may become major hurricanes (category 3 or higher).
Here are some tips for preparing for a hurricane, as provided by the Town of Barnstable's Channel 18.
- Create a disaster plan for yourself, your family and your pets. Review it with each member of the family and be sure everyone is in agreement.
- Make a disaster survival kit.
- Find the nearest emergency shelters and learn about the risks for potential flooding in your area.
- Be willing to follow emergency officials' implicit directions.
- Secure all outdoor objects.
- Stay away from windows.
- Fill your tubs and sinks with water, should the water line break.
- Help vulnerable neighborhoods
- Evacuate if directed
