Barnstable High Sees Dramatic Uptick In Students Garnering National Honor

The BigFuture National Recognition Program recognized nearly 40 local students for their academic achievements.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Nearly 40 Barnstable High School students have been recognized for their outstanding academic achievements by a national program, nearly quadrupling the number of honorees from last year.

The BigFuture National Recognition Program was established by the College Board in 2012 and honors grade 10 and 11 students who "demonstrate strong academic performance and are prepping for success in college and beyond," officials said.

BHS students were recognized in two award categories:

  • First-Generation Recognition Award – This award recognizes students who will be the first in their families to earn a four-year college degree. Eligible students must have taken qualifying assessments, maintained a cumulative GPA of B+ or higher, and either scored in the top 10 percent of test takers or earned a score of three or higher on at least two distinct AP Exams by the end of grade 10.
  • School Recognition Award – This award honors students who demonstrate academic excellence within their own high school community. Eligibility for this award includes the same GPA and test criteria, and students also need to rank among the top 10 percent of test takers in their school or meet the AP exam achievement benchmarks.

District officials said the uptick in recognitions reflects the school’s commitment to college and career readiness.

“We are incredibly proud of our students who have received recognition through the BigFuture Program,” stated BHS Principal Jason Connetta. “These achievements reflect not only these student’s academic dedication, but also the support of their families, teachers, and the entire Barnstable High School community. These awards directly align with our Portrait of a Graduate and our vision for ensuring every student is ready for college, career, and beyond.”
