Police Remind Cape Cod Bargoers To Watch Out For Roofied Drinks

After recent reports of spiked drinks at Barnstable bars, police warn patrons to stay alert while out celebrating over Memorial Day weekend.

HYANNIS, MA — Police are looking into a woman's report that she was drugged at a Hyannis bar Saturday night, WCVB reported.

The owner of EmBargo, where the woman said she was drugged, told WCVB that security camera footage showed the only moment her drink could have been spiked was when she took it with her to the dance floor.

The incident on Saturday wasn't the only one of its kind recently. The Barnstable Police Department said it's gotten multiple "reports of patrons at local bars feeling the effects of possible 'date rape drugs,'" prompting officers to issue a reminder for bar patrons to stay vigilant and keep an eye on their drinks at all times.

Ahead of Memorial Day weekend, when people will be out celebrating by the hundreds, taking steps to keep yourself and your friends safe is especially important.

Barnstable police are encouraging everyone to use the buddy system whenever possible, only take drinks from bartenders or servers, never leave your drink unattended and cover your drink with your hand when you're not looking at it.

Roofies and other date rape drugs are colorless, odorless and flavorless. If your drink has been spiked, you likely won't know it until you start feeling the drug's effects, which include disorientation, confusion and dizziness.

Whether or not an assault occurs, police say spiking drinks "is itself a crime." If you feel your drink has been spiked, call the Barnstable Police at 508-778-3874.
