Bourne Police Overwhelmed With Car Accidents, To Up Enforcement
The department responded to four crashes on Tuesday and another two on Wednesday. They announced new enforcement initiatives as a result.

BOURNE, MA — It's been an exceptionally busy week for the Bourne Police Department, and an unusually dangerous one for local drivers.
On Tuesday, Bourne police and fire officials handled four separate car accidents that resulted in a lane restriction or road closure.
The first happened at 1:15 p.m. on Sandwich Road, where a three-car crash reduced the road to one lane during the investigation. This accident resulted in a citation for following too closely, operating a car with a suspended or revoked license, and without insurance.

Less than an hour later, a utility pole was snapped in a two-car crash just over the town line in Plymouth. The crash prompted the closure of Plymouth Lane in Bourne during the accident investigation.
About 25 minutes later, a two car crash resulted in multiple injuries, with one person needing to be flown to an area hospital after being entrapped in their car. State Road was closed for over an hour during the rescue and investigation.

Police offered an update to that accident, stating that a 22-year-old from Bourne was driving a Jeep involved in the crash while a 78-year-old woman and 83-year-old man were in another car. The woman involved in the crash needed to be flown to an area hospital while the other two were also taken to hospitals.
The woman is said to have suffered serious, but not-life-threatening injuries.
Then, roughly 30 minutes later, a two-car crash involving a tow truck and passenger vehicle resulted in Main Street being reduced to one lane, and one person was issued a citation for improper use of an electronic device.
As if that wasn't enough, Wednesday also saw Bourne officials respond to at least two accidents.
On Scenic Highway in the area of Edgehill Road, a motorcycle and a pickup truck were involved in a crash after officials said the truck was in the westbound lane and made an illegal U-turn, striking the motorcycle. The motorcycle operator was transported with what are believed to be significant, non-life-threatening injuries.
Separately, the intersection of Barlows Landing Road and Shore Road was closed due to a motor vehicle accident.
Increased Enforcement
On Thursday, police announced they'd be increasing traffic enforcement.
Here's what they had to say in their announcement:
Your safety is our top priority! Officers across all shifts will be increasing enforcement of motor vehicle violations and traffic safety concerns throughout the community. This not only involves speed enforcement, but extra attention to restricted maneuvers such as turn prohibitions and U-Turn prohibitions, break down lane violations, school zone infractions, txting/use of electronic device violations, etc.
One of today’s concentrations is on motorists who choose not to wait in the queue for the Sagamore Bridge on ramp from Scenic Hwy and, instead, proceed to the Church Lane intersection and make an illegal right hand turn. We get it, no one likes to wait in traffic. However, not only is this maneuver just poor form, but it causes a hazard to other motorists not expecting the car in front of them to make the illegal turn. At one point this morning, Officers Burke and Kulik had five motorists stopped for this violation at the same time.
