Cape Cod Beach Ranked Among Top 10 Beaches In The Country
Of the 650 public swimming beaches along the United States' coasts, one beach in Massachusetts was ranked among the top 10.
EASTHAM, MA — Coast Guard Beach in Eastham was ranked among the top ten beaches in the nation for 2022, according to Stephen "Dr. Beach" Leatherman, a coastal scientist and professor at Florida International University who has been ranking the top beaches in the country since 1991.
Known for its historic coast guard tower and massive cliffs that overlook the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay, Coast Guard Beach is a top destination spot for Cape Cod beachgoers. Accessible by bicycle or shuttle, the beach features chilly waters perfect for cooling down during heat waves, and waves fit for a surfer.
Ocracoke Lifeguard Beach in the Outer Banks of North Carolina topped the list for 2022. Caladesi Island State Park in Florida, Coopers Beach in Southampton, NY, St. George Island State Park in Florida, and Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Oahu, Hawaii roll out the top five, respectively.

In order to evaluate fairly, the beaches are broken up into categories based on fifty criteria and physical factors, some including seaweed levels, water temperatures, sand quality, management, and safety.
Dr. Beach's criteria is a survey of his "patients," or the 650 public beaches along both sides of the U.S. coast. The scale provides an objective assessment of the country's major public recreational beaches along the Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific oceans.

The survey was initially designed for swimming beaches, but the information can also pertain to the best beaches for sports, walks, scenery and other activities.

- Caladesi Island State Park - Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida
- Coopers Beach - Southampton, New York
- St. George Island State Park - Florida Panhandle
- Duke Kahanamoku Beach - Oahu, Hawaii
- Lighthouse Beach, Buxton - Outer Banks of North Carolina
- Coronado Beach - San Diego, California
- Wailea Beach, Maui, Hawaii
- Beachwalker Park - Kiawah Island, South Carolina
- Coast Guard Beach - Eastham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
