Cape Cod Bus Driver Faces Additional Assault Charges

YARMOUTH, MA — An 80-year-old Cape Cod school bus driver faces new charges after a second victim came forward and said he touched them inappropriately.

Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois announced that a Barnstable County Grand Jury returned indictments against Jeffrey Hyland, 80, of West Yarmouth, for two counts of aggravated indecent assault and battery on a child younger than 14, two counts of reckless endangerment of a child and intimidation of a witness.

The indictments arise from two separate incidents in Barnstable.

Hyland was arraigned in the Barnstable District Court in September on charges of aggravated indecent assault and battery and reckless endangerment of child.

Barnstable Police received a report at the time of an alleged indecent assault and battery on a juvenile female by her male bus driver.

Upon further investigation, the department recovered corroborating evidence of the alleged incident. Hyland was arrested and held overnight at the police department on $ 5,000 bail in September, officials said.

Then, on Oct. 3, 2023, it was reported to Barnstable Police that another juvenile victim had alleged that Hyland had inappropriately touched them on or about Sept. 5, 2023.

No arraignment date has yet been set for Hyland.
