Cape Cod Mansion Built On Dune Close To Collapsing

The controversial home was built in 2010 on an eroding dune.

WELLFLEET, MA – A mansion built in 2010 on a piece of land in the Cape Cod National Seashore called "the Gut" is close to collapsing, according to Wicked Local/Provincetown. The home sits on an eroding dune between Great Island and Griffin Island.

The property was bought in 2006 by Mark and Barbara Blasch, who demolished the existing structure two years later. The Blasches' proposal for a new mansion, at twice the height and three times the floor space, was the subject of multiple lawsuits from residents and officials, Wicked Local reported. The family was ultimately granted permission to build the home, though Wellfleet passed new zoning amendments as a result.

The conservation commission last month unanimously rejected a proposal to save the $4.6 million home, which called for building a 240-foot stone seawall, reinforced with coir fiber rolls, sand and plantings. Officials cited potential damage to the shore and claimed the Blasches knew about the issues with the site when they first proposed the home, according to Wicked Local.
