Two people were extricated from the trench on Tuesday after the collapse at a Cape Cod worksite.

YARMOUTH, MA — One worker has died after a trench collapsed at a worksite on Cape Cod on Tuesday morning.

"Our hearts are with both families, their loved ones, and all who are grieving during this very difficult time," the department said.

The incident remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Division, assigned to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, along with the U.S. Department of Labor Standards Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) based in Boston.

The site is located at 152 South Shore Dr. in South Yarmouth near the Skipper Restaurant and Chowder House.

Workers were trapped following the collapse, officials said. Police shared earlier in the day that one worker was extricated and rescue teams were providing lifesaving measures.

"We ask the public to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to work safely and efficiently," police said at the time.

According to NBC10, two people were rescued after one was initially caught in the trench after it collapsed and another jumped in to try to rescue him.

A third person has yet to be recovered from the trench, but officials said they believe they are dead.

As of Tuesday afternoon officials said they are still working to free that person from the trench.

This is a developing story.
