Incumbent Keating Wins MA 9th Congressional District Election: AP

Rep. Bill Keating has defeated Republican challenger Dan Sullivan, the Associated Press said.

MASSACHUSETTS — Democratic incumbent Bill Keating has defeated Republican challenger Dan Sullivan in the race for the state's 9th congressional district seat.

The Associated Press called the race just before 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday with 79 percent of the votes counted.

Gosnold was the first municipality to report vote totals in the race, according to the Associated Press. The town reported Keating up by 34 percent around 8:15 p.m.

  • Keating — 211,019
  • Sullivan — 164,211

Keating has represented the 9th since 2013.

The district encompasses a fairly sprawling region of the state. Keating's website describes the borders as "stretching north to Cohasset, south to Nantucket, east to Provincetown and west to Westport."

While voters have favored Keating for a decade, he hasn't made a fan of his challenger Dan Sullivan.

Sullivan, a registered nurse by trade, said he disagrees with Keating on issues of immigration, one of the two major pain points for him in the state's current political climate.

The other top issue, Sullivan said in a Patch Q&A, was housing.
