MASSACHUSETTS — Victorian homes are beautiful. The ornate design, dark details and general aesthetic often sought after for both home buyers and, critically, set designers for horror movies.

Yes, the homes are beautiful, but there's a bit of fear that comes along with the design in some instances.

We at Patch aren't the first people to come to that conclusion. A Google search trying to discover why the homes are so creepy turns up plenty of results.

Fast Company, the Washington Post and others have asked the question since as far back as 2014: Why are Victorian homes so creepy?

According to multiple reports, the shift from luxury symbol to creepy dwelling can be traced back to the fall of the American Gilded Age.

A Vox report explained that "after World War I, Victorian houses were seen as extravagant and already antiquated; they were often abandoned in favor of different styles. Their relationship to the troubling end of the Gilded Age in America eventually led to their depiction as haunted and ghostly in both fine art and pop culture, and now they’re an unspoken symbol of dread."

As for the Victorians featured in this week's Patch homes column, the upkeep has kept them far less creepy than homes often featured in scary movies. But you tell us, creepy or not?
