Longfellow Bridge Closed to Cars Overnight This Week

Find a different route Thursday, drivers.

Plan ahead, drivers - the Longfellow Bridge between Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood and Cambridge will be closed to cars and other vehicles Thursday.

The Mass. Department of Transportation said it plans to close the bridge to vehicular traffic from 11 p.m. Thursday through 5 a.m. Friday. Drivers will have to find another way across the Charles.

Bikers, pedestrians and Red Line riders are still good.

The closure is necessary to perform utility work through manholes in the downstream roadway, MassDOT said - part of long-running, ongoing reconstruction of the aging bridge.

More information is available weekly from the agency's traffic information page here.
