As Preservation Week (April 25 through May 1) comes to a close, our May Collection Spotlight serves the dual purpose of highlighting a historically significant and older piece in our collection, while also showcasing the need for preservation work within our library.
The featured item is Sagittarius's Letters and Political Speculations, written by John Mein. Mein, who wrote under the pen name “Sagittarius,” was a Loyalist and the publisher of the Tory newspaper The Boston Chronicle. This book of letters was published in 1775, and over the past 246 years it has seen a lot of use and handling, which has resulted in its current less-than-ideal state. Click through to our blog post to learn about it’s condition, it’s anticipated preservation treatment, as well as some further information about the book itself.
