Children Injured as Car Crashes into Billerica Daycare Center

Officials say a 2-year-old was pinned under the vehicle.

BILLERICA, MA - A car crashed into a daycare center in Billerica late Thursday afternoon, pinning a 2-year-old child under the vehicle, police said.

The child was alert when ambulances arrived at the scene, and he was transported to the hospital. Two other children were treated at the scene.

First reports of the crash came in just after 5:40 p.m. Thursday.

Police say the vehicle, a Subaru Outback was operated by a 38-year-old woman from Billerica when it struck the building of A Brighter Rainbow Learning Center located at 862 Boston Road.

According to police, the woman had been driving on the northbound side of Boston Road (Rte. 3) when she had a medical episode in her vehicle. While this was occurring, she hit multiple cars on the shoulder of the plaza at 880 Boston Road.

She then drove up onto the curb, struck a fence and then crashed into the side of the learning center. The vehicle crashed through the wall of the building and into the main childcare area. Four children were inside at the time, and at least three other children were in the outside play area.

One of the children inside, a male toddler, was struck and pinned under the vehicle. The boy was alert and conscious upon ambulance's arrival. He was transported to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington. Two other children were treated at the scene.

The woman was also transported to Lahey with non life-threatening injuries.

This incident remains open and under investigation.
