On this day in 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 – which ended unequal application of voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools, at the workplace and by facilities that served the general public known as "public accommodations" – was approved after surviving an 83-day filibuster in the United States Senate. The passage came 99 years to the day when slaves in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom. The anniversary is celebrated in Texas and 13 other Southern states as Juneteenth.
