5 Things: Flag Day, Second Friday Coffeehouse Benefit Concert

Events occurring in Belmont on Friday, June 14.

1. Bring out Old Glory: Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on this day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

2. Tonight, the Second Friday Coffeehouse will hold a benefit concert for Belmont Against Racism and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, the nonsectarian organization that promotes human rights and social justice worldwide. The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. at The , 404 Concord Ave.

First Church's own keyboardist and singer, Richard Curzi – performing at the Coffeehouse for the 13th time – performing both sets in a variety of musical configurations in a wide-ranging variety show. In the second set, special guests Jon Svetkey and Heather Quay will be followed by Positive Energy, performing a collection of hits from the 1980s that they featured at the recent POMS fundraiser in February.

3. Residents who have household hazardous waste to dispose of can do so for free tomorrow, Saturday, June. 15, at the Minuteman Hazardous Products Regional Facility at the Lexington Compost Facility 60 Hartwell Ave. in Lexington from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. But be forewarned: residents must pre-register with the Board of Health. Residents who do not pre-register, must pay a fee at the facility. You must also bring identification and proof of residency to the facility. Residents can registers at the Board of Health, Homer Municipal Building, 2nd Fl., 19 Moore St. Phone: 617-993-2720

4. The Senior Book Discussion group will meet at 11 a.m. at the Beech Street Center (the Belmont senior center) to discuss this month's selection: "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

5. Here's a great rainy day event: Well-loved local musician Liz Buchanan performs original songs and traditional favorites in the Assembly Room of Belmont Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
