5 Things You Need to Know Today: October 16

1. The Belmont Council on Aging is sponsoring a forum on Ballot Question 2, “Prescribing Medication to End Life” that will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Beech Street Center. According to the text of the initiative, the proposed measure would allow for a terminally ill patient – defined as a patient being given six months or fewer to live – to be given lethal drugs. This forum will be moderated by the Beech Street Center’s Director, Nava Niv-Vogel and will include representatives from both sides of the issue—“Second Thoughts: People with disabilities opposing legalization of assisted suicide” and “Death with Dignity.” There will be time at the end of the forum for your questions.

2. Tie down the jersey cause it could get rough tonight as unbeaten Winchester comes to Harris Field to take on the host Belmont High School Marauders in Boys' Soccer under the lights at 6 p.m. Belmont is one of only two teams to tie the Sachems and the only one to take a point from them in Winchester.

3. Experience some magic at 1:15 p.m. at the Beech Street Center as 15-year-old Ryan Lally performs card and coin tricks, making balls appear and disappear before your very eyes. Ryan is a member of the Society of Young Magicians and works at the Magic Arts Studio in Watertown. He has been studying magic for four years since he was 11. Come and be entertained!

4. Drop-in yoga classes, taught by professional instructors in the Vinyasa style – flowing with the breath – will be held in Gardner Hall (enter via Alexander Street) of the Plymouth Congregational Church, 582 Pleasant St., beginning at 9:15 a.m. All levels welcome. Bring your own mat. Childcare is available for $6 per child with a $12 family maximum. There is also free parking on Pleasant and Leonard streets and behind Macy's. All proceeds benefit the Plymouth Nursery School.

5. Belmont's Benton Library Pre-School Story Time is back beginning at 10:30 a.m. For children ages 2 1/2 to 5, this event features stories, word plays, and other activities. Siblings are welcome; parents or caretakers must be in attendance throughout the session. Registration is not required.
