Belmont School Department Issues Tips On Being Cautious

Responding to an incident that occurred yesterday, Sept. 4, Belmont School Superintendent Dr. Thomas Kingston issued an "important safety alert" today, Sept. 5, to the school community reminding parents and students of a series of safety rules when coming and leaving school properties. 

On Wednesday, the first day of school in Belmont, a Chenery Middle School student was approached by a man in a white SUV who attempted to entice the student into the vehicle, according to Kingston. He noted that the student remembered not to enter a stranger's vehicle and immediately reported the incident. 

"Over the next few days there will be increased police presence during walking hours," said Kingston. 

"At the same time, and without creating undue alarm, we do ask parents and guardians to remind students about a few simple rules of caution," said Kingston.

• Whenever possible, walk with one or more friends.

• Avoid shortcuts, alleys, remote areas.  If confronted by a stranger, run to where people are gathered or to a nearby home.

• Don’t speak to strangers, even if the stranger offers toys, pets, candy, money, or even asks for directions.

• Don’t get into a strange car for any reason.

Kingston asked parents if their children have any unusual encounter to call the Belmont Police using the 911 emergency number and provide as much information as possible.  

If parents observes anything unusual or suspicious, do not hesitate to inform the Belmont Police Department, he said.

"The safety of Belmont’s children is the responsibility of all of us," said Kingston.
