Belmont, State PD Search For Break-In Suspects

Residents on Eliot Road were told to shelter in place for a few hours while police looked for two people who tried to break into a home.

BELMONT, MA — Belmont police along with State Police and Transit Police searched for two break-in suspects on Thursday night after they were spotted on a resident's home surveillance cameras.

The pair were spotted on camera in the backyard of a home on Eliot Road. Belmont police have been receiving an increased number of break-in calls and police said the pair matched the description of the suspects in the first set of break-ins that happened late last month.

While Belmont police searched on the ground, the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing was out searching for the two people in the air. Residents in the area were asked to shelter-in-place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. while authorities searched.

The suspects weren't found but police are reminding residents to take some precautions to keep from becoming a target. Most of the break-ins happened during the late afternoon or early evening and through the back of the home. Police said the suspect is targeting expensive jewelry, electronics and cash. If possible, police suggest residents place these items in a safe deposit box or a hidden area other than a dresser or closet.

Most of these breaks are occurring in the area of the Winn Brook Elementary School. The Belmont Police have responded by increasing directed patrol activity in that area and the detective division is working full time on the cases.
