Beth El Open House, Roadwork Around Town and 4 Minutes, 33 Seconds of Silence
Events occurring in Belmont on Thursday, Aug. 29.

1. Beth El Temple Center is holding its annual Open House at 7 p.m. at the Temple located at 2 Concord Ave. It's an opportunity to meet Rabbi Jonathan Kraus, other members of its staff and members of the vibrant and inclusive congregation to learn about the community, the religious school and educational and social programs for all ages. Mingle and enjoy refreshments. Beth El is an inclusive Reform Jewish community with a dedication to interfaith, family, and social action programs.
2. Sewer and drain repairs will continue on Harding Avenue, Dalton Road, Park Road and Hamilton Road this week. So expect detours.
3. These are the final days to see the photo exhibit "Connections: A Tribute to Paula Lerner" in which the advanced photography class at Belmont High School honored the late Belmont photog and journalist with a visual tribute. The exhibit is at the Belmont Media Center, 9 Lexington St. in Waverley Square until Aug. 31.
4. Heads Up: The Council on Aging's Annual Ice Cream Social will happen on Friday, Aug. 30 at the Beech Street Center. This yearly event is open to the public in which Belmontians and their children and grandchildren are especially encouraged to attend. But please come in or call 617-993-2970 the Center to sign up to assure ice cream for you and your party.
5. Today is a memorable day in music history: born on this day in 1868, French oboist, conductor, music educator and composer Georges Longy who played first chair oboe for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and established a music school in Cambridge named after him; in 1925, be-bop legend Charlie "Bird" Parker was born as was the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, in 1958. Today is also the anniversary of the final concert performance by the Beatles in San Francisco in 1965 and the first performance in 1952 in Woodstock, NY, of John Cage's "4:33" in which a pianist sits before a piano for 4 minutes and 33 seconds without playing a note.
