Blood Drive At The Media Center

New set of television programs, shows roll out this week.

There will be a blood drive at Belmont Media Center on July 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Center is located at 9 Lexington St., across Trapelo Road from Shaw's Supermarket.

Everyone who donates will receive a coupon for a free carton of Friendly's Ice Cream.

Blood donors must:

  • Be healthy*

* Note: Healthy means that you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, healthy also means that you are being treated and the condition is under control.

  • Be at least 17 years old in most states, or 16 years old with parental consent if allowed by state law.
  • Weigh at least 110 lbs. Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18 years old and younger and all high school donors.
  • Maintain a healthy iron level in your diet by eating iron rich foods, such as spinach, red meat, fish, poultry, beans, iron-fortified cereals and raisins.
  • Get a good night's sleep.
  • Drink an extra 16 oz. of water and fluids before the donation.
  • Eat a healthy meal before your donation.Avoid fatty foods, such as hamburgers, fries or ice cream before donating. Tests for infections done on all donated blood can be affected by fats that appear in your blood for several hours after eating fatty foods.
  • Remember to bring your donor card, driver's license or two other forms of ID.

During the donation:

  • Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow.
  • Let the phlebotomist know if you have a preferred arm and show the staff any good veins that have been used successfully in the past to draw blood.
  • Relax, listen to music, talk to other donors or read during the donation process.
  • Take the time to enjoy a snack and a drink in the refreshments area immediately after donating.

A new episode of the Payson Park Music Festival features a performance by former American Idol contestant Ayla Brown.
