Markey Takes Belmont, State to Win Senate Seat

Belmont's US Rep. thumped Republican Gabriel Gomez two-to-one in Town of Homes.

It wasn't close.

US Rep. Ed Markey, who has represented Belmont for more than a decade in the US House of Representatives, showed his dominance in the Democrat stonghold by thumping Republican newcomer Gabriel Gomez by more than two-to-one, 4,542 to 2,188, in the special election held Tuesday, June 25 to replace John Kerry as US Senator, according to Town Clerk Ellen Cushman at 8:30 p.m. in Belmont Town Hall.

A respectable 38 percent or 6,763 of 17,850 registered Belmont voters turn out in the 93 degree heat.

Markey was announced the winner of the election state-wide at 9:05 p.m., according to New England Cable News.
