One In Five Took A Ballot in Primary Election

With few contested races, 3,400 turn out for party prelim contests.

With little to bring them out, only one in five of Belmont's 16,373 voters turned up to the polls today, Tuesday, Sept. 14 to vote in the state primary election.

With all eight precincts in, 3,400 voters – 20.8 percent of registered voters – cast ballots.

In the contested races in the Democrat Party, Steven Grossman turned back Stephen Murphy handedly, 1,726 to 446; and Suzanne Bump topped the ballot for state auditor with 1,379 votes compared to Mike Lake (410) and Guy Glodis (340).

While he technically had a rival, State Sen. Steven Tolman outpolled William Feegbeh, 2,099 to 162. His total also gave him the highest vote total in Belmont, besting Gov. Deval Patrick (1,926) and State Rep. Will Brownsberger (1,960).

On the Republican side of the ballot, the hottest race was the preliminary election to challenge incumbent Democrat Ed Markey for US Congress as Gerry Dembrowski beat out Thomas Tierney, 483 to 394.
