Police: First Lesson, Know the Parking Laws

The Belmont Police Department has words of advice to parents (and residents in general) who are thinking about parking near one of the six schools in the next few days: We'll be watching where you park!

With the beginning of a new school year, parents and other drivers may have forgotten or are new to the parking bylaws that involve school buildings. 

So with school beginning in a matter of hours, the BPD just want you to remember that when parking on the streets surrounding the schools, they ask that drivers:

DO NOT

• Block Driveways
• Park within 20 feet of an intersection
• Park on Sidewalks
• Park on Crosswalks
• Park opposite another parked vehicle so that you are failing to leave an unobstructed 12 foot lane for passing traffic.

Any violations, you will be ticketed and may be TOWED.

Below are the traffic rules, orders and fines of Belmont:

Article V.

Section 1.

General Prohibitions – No person shall stand or park or allow, permit, or suffer any vehicle registered in his name to park stand or park in any of the following places:

(a)          Within an intersection. ($15.00)

(b)          Upon any sidewalk.     ($15.00)

(c)          Upon any crosswalk   ($25.00)

(d)          Upon a roadway where parking is permitted unless both wheels on the right side of the vehicle (or both wheels on the curb side of the vehicle on a one way street and heading in the direction of travel) are within 12 inches of the curb of the roadway. ($15.00)

(e)          Upon any roadway where parking of a vehicle will not leave a clear and unobstructed lane of at least 12 feet wide for a passing vehicle. ($25.00)

Violators are subject to fines, and the vehicle may be towed for such offenses.
