Rolling Along: Belmont Soccer Teams Remain Unbeaten

Belmont Boys perfect – 3-0 and unscored on – while Girls finding their scoring touch.

The calendar says it's late summer, but on Wednesday, Sept. 11, the high temperature (it hit 92 degrees in town) was about as hot as Belmont High School's soccer teams.

After the first three games of the season, the squads are on a roll that have some thinking that both teams will be playing when T-shirts and shorts are replaced by heavy coats and scarves.

Not the usual suspects score for Belmont in win

Over in Stoneham, Belmont Boys' Head Coach Peter Guellnitz decided to switch up his lineup a bit after a pair of wins in an effort to keep things interesting. And he got just that as usual defender Luke Gallagher netted a true hat trick (three consecutive goals) playing on the front line, leading Belmont to a 5-0 win over the host Spartans.

Forward Andrew Eurdolian and back-up freshman goaltender (playing forward) Marvyn Dorchin scored their maiden goals this season as starting goalie Peter Berens claimed his third consecutive clean sheet.

A quick pair push Girls' past Spartans

Belmont Girls' Head Coach Paul Graham was waiting for his team to break out in the scoring table. And while junior Lizze Frick scored from a long-distance shot (nearly 20 meters out) in the first half, a defensive break down allowed the quick Spartans to score the first goal this season against Belmont junior goaltender Linda Herlihy through senior Alissandra Hillis to knot up the score 1-1 at half time.

Then, 10-minutes into the second half, the deluge. Belmont sophomore midfield Katrina Rokosz put the Marauders into the lead, 2-1, with 29:30 remaining in the half. But that advantage didn't last long, in fact only 64 seconds as Stoneham's senior forward captain Samantha Gendall slipped in front of a Belmont defender to slot a centering pass by Herlihy for a 2-2 tie.

Yet Marauder fans needed to wait a mere 23 seconds for freshman Julia Cella to flick a header into the far end of Stoneham's goal.

And it took senior captain Gabrielle Joyal to seal the deal by left-footing a shot into the back of the Stoneham's net with a quarter hour remaining, giving Belmont their second win in three games with a tie against Watertown in the opener.

Graham praised Frick and freshman forward standout Ava Colasin for their creative play up front and noted Lizzie Ferrante work on the defense end of the field.
