What To Do With Oil And Hazardous Waste Found During Spring Cleaning

Highway Dept. can help dispose of extra oil left over the winter.

It's that time of year when residents start their spring cleaning which also includes going through your garden shed, garage or basement to get rid waste. And sometimes that includes finding material that cannot be safely put into the regular trash.

Most residents know it's illegal to dispose of those hazardous liquids down the storm drain is illegal and are not allowed in the weekly garbage removal. In addition, simple household items such as nail polish remover and bleach are hazardous waste that must be handled property when getting rid of them.

In an attempt to help homeowners, the Belmont Highway Department has facilities and advice to assist residents in disposing this dangerous material.

Waste Oil: Residential waste oil (not mixed with anything else) may be brought to the Highway Yard, C Street, weekdays 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.Limit: 5 gallon per resident.

Directions to Highway Yard: From Trapelo Road at Waverley Square, take second left onto Waverley Street.  Take the first left onto Grant Avenue.  Go a short distance onto C Street. Go to "Dispatch Office" and sign in to dispose of waste oil.

Hazardous Waste: Please call the Health Department at 617-993-2720 for household hazardous waste such as:

• Chlorine bleach

• Rug cleaners

• Acids

• Antifreeze

• Auto batteries

• Moth balls

• Oven cleaner

• Gasoline

• Pesticides/Herbicides

• Nail polish remover

• Button batteries
