Beverly Fire: Rowell Ave Resident Sent to Hospital

The fire that took a Rowell Avenue home on Saturday morning left a resident in the hospital.

BEVERLY, MA – The fire at Rowell Avenue woke the home's resident before the sun was up on Saturday. Emergency personnel took him to the hospital, and it is unclear if he has been released.

The fire department responded to 38 Rowell Ave. just before 6 a.m. on a report of a house fire. The first crews on scene found heavy fire on the back porch, and smoke coming out of the front door and attic.

Deputy Chief William Walsh said on Monday that the blaze – which seems to have originated in the back – is still under investigation. The single-family home is uninhabitable, he said, and the damage totals around $180,000.

Crews tackled the fire in the back on Saturday and worked their way up to the attic, where the fire traveled through the balloon-frame housing. Salem, Manchester, and Danvers fire departments responded to the two-alarm fire, and Middleton, Wenham, and Topsfield crews helped cover Beverly's stations during the blaze.

The fire was knocked out around 9 a.m., and no firefighters were injured.

"They did great, fantastic effort by the firefighters," said Walsh. He said the Red Cross was possibly trying to secure housing for the resident.
