Beverly Man Pepper-Sprayed After Bar Fight

Man arrested on disorderly conduct charges following an incident at Fibber McGee's.

A Beverly man was pepper sprayed by police last week after resisting getting in a cruiser following a bar fight outside Fibber McGee's.

Police spokesman Dave Costa said police responded to the Cabot Street bar at 11:04 p.m. Wednesday on report of an intoxicated patron bothering the DJ.

When police arrived, they observed two males, identified as the DJ and Benjamin Jones, 34 of Pleasant St. outside fighting.

"The two stopped fighting when they saw police but Jones's intoxication was obvious and he was extremely belligerent towards officers," Costa said. "Jones refused several requests to stop yelling and continued yelling and swearing at officers."

Police said Jones' behavior was attracting a crowd outside and causing vehicle traffic to slow down due to everyone trying to see what that commotion was.

Jones was advised he was under arrest and handcuffed for disorderly conduct. As they got him to the cruiser, police said Jones started to resist officers and would not get into the cruiser.

"He finally sat down, but refused to go all they way in and started kicking at officers," Costa said. "Jones was warned that if he continued to resist and kick at officers he would be sprayed with pepper spray but he still continued his behavior."

Police reports said Jones was sprayed with a one second burst of pepper spray but continued kicking at officers and had to be sprayed a second time. At that point, officers finally were able to get him into the cruiser.

Jones was charged with disorderly conduct.
