BEVERLY, MA — A brewpub that opened on Cabot Street as the sister location of RiverWalk Brewery's Newburyport taproom less than two years ago has closed.

The Falconer Taproom & Kitchen, which originally opened in late 2022 as The Falconer Pub, announced on its Instagram account that it has closed amid "a lease that is expiring and continued financial losses."

"We could not find a sustainable path forward," the post read. "We have been working with our employees (Tuesday) and we are happy to announce that we have found roles for many of them at our Newburyport location, so you can still see some of your favorite faces."

Originally opened as a salute to River Walk Brewery owner Steve Sanderson's favorite neighborhood pubs in England, Sanderson told Patch last July that The Falconer Pub was being rebranded as the Falconer Taproom & Kitchen because "the pub name, unfortunately, has a different connotation here in the United States.

"The more we talked about it the more we realized that what we wanted to do is the next evolution of the taproom in America that has less of that industrial feel and has more of that community feel."

But seven months later, the decision was made to close the location altogether.

"There are many people that have put a lot into The Falconer over the last two years, including our tireless team of managers, servers and kitchen wizards," the post read. "We have grown to know and love our regulars and will miss seeing them and catching up with their lives."

The post also apologized for communication missteps with staff and customers — which included a mug club membership — as reports of the imminent closure began to circulate.

"It is unfortunate that we weren't able to address this publicly in our planned time frame," the post said. "But we were focused on communicating with our staff prior to releasing any public info.

"Our initial response wasn't appropriate, and we apologize. This has been personally challenging and there has been a lot of lost sleep. We did the best we could and will cherish all of the good times we had."
