Flood Warning in Effect, Runs Through Dinnertime

A flood warning has been issued for urban areas and small streams in Beverly, as well as much of the North Shore on Tuesday afternoon because “significant flooding....is likely inside the Route 128 corridor.”

The flood warning was issued by the National Weather Service and runs until 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The warning covers “south central Essex County,” plus areas of Norfolk, Suffolk and Middlesex counties. In addition to Beverly, the warning covers Salem, Saugus, Lynn, Revere, Peabody, Danvers and Melrose.

Already, 1-2 inches of rain had fallen by 3 p.m. and another 1-2 inches of rain was expected before the Nor’Easter ends on Tuesday evening. Urban areas, including streets and underpasses, could see “significant flooding,” according to the weather service, plus small streams could also experience flooding.

In an earlier flood advisory, the weather service said that ”widespread minor flooding of streets, underpasses and poor drainage areas” should be expected on Tuesday and the evening commute will take longer than expected.

The flood warning meant that “significant flooding is imminent” and drivers should be aware of the possibility of ponding water and should not drive through flooded road areas.
