Solution in Sight for Downtown Tree Wells?

A permeable material made from recycled tires could help make downtown even more attractive.

Beverly, MA - For years, the members of Beverly Main Streets have been trying to find a solution to fix the unsightly tree wells on Cabot and Rantoul Streets.

Volunteers have tried landscape fabric, mulching, and stone dust among other ideas that didn't provide a lasting fix.

But when volunteer Suzie Lamont saw some trees on vacation that looked like the trees downtown should look, she brought the idea back to Beverly.

Beverly Main Streets recently arranged for a demonstration of the product, which is made of stone and recycled tires held together with a binder and spread into a tree well. The product is permeable, so water can get through it and it flexes as the tree trunk grows and roots expand.

You can check out the before and after photos above to see the difference.
