Which Presidential Candidates Are Beverly Donors Backing?

Beverly residents made 288 contributions totaling $51,306 to presidential candidates in 2019, according to year-end campaign finance data.

BEVERLY, MA — Beverly residents made 288 contributions totaling $51,306 to presidential candidates in 2019, according to year-end campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

The biggest beneficiary was U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, whose presidential campaign received $11,200 before he ended his long shot bid in August. Of the Democratic candidates still in the race, the biggest recipient of campaign contributions from Beverly donors was former Vice President Joe Biden, who received $9,650.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld ($7,100) and President Donald Trump ($6,142) both topped Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who received $4,660 from Beverly donors. Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick's presidential campaign did not receive any donations from Beverly residents in 2019.in 2019

The biggest individual contributor from Beverly was Joseph Alsop, who spread a total of $9,100 in contributions to Biden, Moulton, Montana Gov. Steve Bullock and Michael Bennett, the U.S. senator from Colorado who once worked as superintendent of Denver Public Schools.

In an October interview, the founder of Progress Software said he did not start making campaign contributions until 2011, when he started backing Democratic candidates in states and districts across the country.

"I have been concerned about concentration of wealth and the power of oligopolies, particularly since 2016," Alsop, 74, said. "I hope to help create an environment where everyone wins, not just the wealthy and well connected, and which preserves American leadership in the world."
