2020 Residential Property Tax Rates For 344 MA Communities

Residential tax rates decreased on average in Massachusetts for 2020. The median residential tax rate for the 344 communities with available information as of Jan. 7 is $15.27 per $1,000 in assessed value, according to the latest data on the Department of Revenue's Division of Local Services
That's down from what Patch reported in 2019 was $15.48 per $1,000 of assessed value. That number was up 38 cents from 2018.
The town with the lowest residential tax rate rests in the Berkshires on the border of Connecticut. The tax rate in Hancock is $2.78.

Joining Hancock in the top ten are communities on Martha's Vineyard and the Cape, as well as one of the state's biggest cities in Cambridge.
The people of Longmeadow once again have the highest residential tax rates at $24.21, a 12-cent increase from 2018. Most of the communities that make up the high end of the list are in Western Massachusetts.

Boston's residential tax rate is $10.56, 2 cents higher than last year. Most surrounding suburbs are between about $9 and $13. The residential tax rate in Worcester is $17.
Tax bills reflect the tax rate being applied to the assessed value of the land and buildings on a given property. For example, for the owner of a property assessed at $250,000, a tax rate of $15.48 would result in a tax bill of $3,870.
