Boston Police Increase Patrols For Local Media After MD Shooting

Police Commissioner William Evans has called for increased patrols around the offices of local news agencies.

BOSTON, MA — Boston's top police official is calling for officers to secure Boston's media outlets following a fatal shooing at a newspaper office in Annapolis, Maryland Thursday. Police Commissioner William Evans called for "increased and directed patrols in and around various media agencies throughout the city."

This comes after a man with a shotgun walked into the newsroom of one of Maryland's oldest newspapers, the Capital Gazette, and opened fire, killing five people.

There is no credible threat to any Boston news organization in the city, Evans said.

News outlets with offices in Boston include The Boston Globe, Boston Herald, WHDH, and WBZ. Evans did not specify which media outlets would get increased patrols nearby.

The TV station WCVB is situated in Needham. WFXT is in Dedham, and NECN/NBC Boston works out of an office in Newton.

William Krampf, deputy chief of the Anne Arundel County Police Department, said the Capital Gazette gunman was carrying flash grenades and smoke bombs in a backpack. An "explosive device" was also found on the newspaper's property, according to Krampf. CNN said he used a shotgun in the attack.
