LAWRENCE, MA — Gov. Charlie Baker warned people that the coronavirus is still "dangerous and contagious" despite the state easing into phase two of its reopening.

Baker, speaking Tuesday morning at a New Balance shoe factory that pivoted to making personal protective equipment, said Massachusetts cannot begin letting up on coronavirus precautions. His warning comes as restaurants, parks and other gathering spaces reopen with restrictions amid warming temperatures and a pent-up desire to get back outside.

"We are very much still in this fight against COVID," Baker said. "No one should take the foot off the pedal."

Baker and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh asked employers to allow workers to work from home for as long as possible, even as offices opened to 25 percent capacity.

The public health data continues to improve — on Monday, the state reported 38 new deaths and 193 cases of coronavirus, bringing the totals to 7,353 and 103,626, respectively. But any potential spikes due to protests and lax social distancing won't be known for at least a few more days.
