Boston Public Schools Beginning Year Fully Remote

The city intends on bringing students back to class two days a week, but not before October and as late as mid-November, if all goes well.

BOSTON — Boston Public Schools will begin the year in a fully remote model and eventually move to two days a week of in-person learning, Mayor Marty Walsh announced Friday.

The first day of remote learning will be Sept. 21. Students will then be brought back in waves depending on public health metrics. In-person learning will be suspended if the testing rate rises above 4 percent; The city's test rate is currently at 2.8 percent.

The phased reopening approach will bring the highest-needs students back to school as early as Oct. 1.

Students in grades 4-8 will come back as early as Nov. 5.

Students in grades 9-12 will come back as early as Nov. 16.

Families will be able to choose between sending their students to class or staying remote. Those who go to class will do so either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, with the other three days being remote.

"This approach will give us time to assess health data before each step, with @HealthyBoston," Walsh said on Twitter. "It will allow us to address learning needs and opportunity gaps, in person and by providing extra help for students learning online."
