Boston Tops List Of Best Sports Cities In America: Study

Boston took the crown in WalletHub's study of America's best cities for sports.

BOSTON, MA — Boston has numerous championships in all the major sports and now it can add one more to the collection — that of best sports city in America.

A ranking by personal finance company WalletHub put Boston at the top of the list.

"In search of the best sports cities from the fan’s perspective, WalletHub compared 399 cities across more than 50 key metrics related to the five largest sports in the U.S.," WalletHub said of its study.

To determine the best sports cities, WalletHub assigned a weight to each sports category corresponding with the percentage of U.S. adults who claim to follow that particular sport, according to Gallup.

The weights were as follows:

Football: 60%
Baseball: 14%
Basketball: 13%
Soccer: 7%
Hockey: 6%

Besides finishing first overall, Boston was also the top hockey town in America.

"Boston tops the list of the best sports cities this year because of its strong appreciation for all types of sports, numerous professional teams, and proximity to iconic stadiums and arenas," Wallet Hub said. "Some venues of note include Fenway Park, TD Garden, Gillette Stadium, and Harvard Stadium. Boston hosts professional teams across various sports, including one each in the NBA, MLB, MLS, and NFL."

Los Angeles finished second to Boston with Pittsburgh, New York and Boston rounding out the top five.
